Collapse of Self-trained Language Models

Herel, David, Mikolov, Tomas

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In various fields of knowledge creation, including science, new ideas often build on pre-existing information. In this work, we explore this concept within the context of language models. Specifically, we explore the potential of self-training models on their own outputs, akin to how humans learn and build on their previous thoughts and actions. While this approach is intuitively appealing, our research reveals its practical limitations. We find that extended self-training of the GPT-2 model leads to a significant degradation in performance, resulting in repetitive and collapsed token output.

Providing the right products at the right time with machine learning

MIT Technology Review

The journey toward successfully deployed machine learning operations (MLOps) starts with data, says global head of machine learning operations and platforms at Kraft Heinz Company, Jorge Balestra. Curating well-organized and accessible data means enterprises can leverage their data volumes to train and develop AI and machine learning models. A strong data strategy lays the foundation for these AI and machine learning tools to use data to detect supply chain disruptions, identify and address cost inefficiencies, and predict demand for products. "Never forget that data is the fuel, and data, it takes effort, it is a journey, it never ends, because that's what is really what I would call what differentiates a lot of successful efforts compared to unsuccessful ones," says Balestra. This is especially crucial but challenging within the CPG sector where data is often incomplete given the inconsistent methods for consumer habit tracking among different retailers.

How Video Game Designers Peek Inside Their Players' Lives

Slate

A video game designer responds to K Chess' "Escape Worlds." These are the words that every working artist, no matter the medium, wants to hear at some point. Everyone has at least one piece of art--a formative album, a deeply felt novel, a visit to grand architecture, a powerful movie--that strikes them at the right time, in the right way, so that the impact lasts forever. While a novelist or film crew have to do their best to make a story that is personal and honest and hope that it is relatable, game designers have the opportunity to co-author an experience with the players. This opportunity for participation is what drew me into the craft.

FAIR Content: Better Chatbot Answers and Content Reusability at Scale - DataScienceCentral.com

Back in 2018, I had the privilege of keynoting at one of Semantic Web Company's events in Vienna, as well as attending the full event. It was a great opportunity to immerse myself in the Central European perspective on the utility of Linked Open Data standards and how those standards were being applied. I got to meet innovators at enterprises making good use of Linked Open Vocabularies with the help of SWC's PoolParty semantics platform, Ontotext's GraphDB and Semiodesk's semantic graph development acceleration software, for example. There is so much that is impactful and powerful going on at these kinds of semantic technology events. So many people in the audience grasp the importance of a semantic layer to findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) data, regardless of its origin and its original form–whether structured data, or document and multimedia content.

Robotic bees and roots offer hope of healthier environment and sufficient food

Robohub

Robotics and AI can help build healthier bee colonies, benefitting biodiversity and food supply. But unlike the rebellious replicants in the 1982 sci-fi thriller Blade Runner, these ones are here to work. Combining miniature robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the plan is for the robotic bees to stimulate egg laying in the queen by, for example, feeding her the right foods at the right time. 'We plan to affect a whole ecosystem by interacting with only one single animal, the queen,' said Dr Farshad Arvin, a roboticist and computer scientist at the University of Durham in the UK. 'If we can keep activities like egg laying happening at the right time, we are expecting to have healthier broods and more active and healthy colonies.

Council Post: Explainable AI: The Importance Of Adding Interpretability Into Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

AI is fast becoming embedded in industries, economies and lives, making decisions, recommendations and predictions. These trends mean it's business-critical to understand how AI-enabled systems arrive at specific outputs. It's not enough for an AI algorithm to generate the right result--knowing "the reason why" is now a business fundamental. The process has to be transparent, trustworthy and compliant--far removed from the opaque "black-box" concept that has characterized some AI advances in recent times. At the same time, these advances should not be stifled.

Motivating Customer Action and Driving Business Growth with AI-Generated, Personalized Digital Marketing

Impact of Increased Digital Noise: Consumers today receive more digital marketing messages than they did a decade ago, many of them irrelevant. The cumulative effect of this "digital noise" makes it harder for retailers to engage and motivate prospective and existing customers. Personalized messages grounded in real-time, aggregated consumer insights can help retailers stand out on the right channels at the right time. Benefits of AI-Generated, Personalized Marketing: Increased brand engagement and increased conversion are the top two improvements that global marketers see as a result of implementing greater personalization, according to a study by Acquia in late 2021. Importance of First-Party Data: According to a study of US-based executives conducted by Coresight Research and Persado in November 2021, driving online sales (55.6% of respondents) and providing the right information to the right person at the right time (51.4%) are the top two benefits of using first-party data for marketing purposes.

Beyond the banhammer: How AI is changing content moderation

How do you build a more inviting and inclusive game community? Building and nurturing strong communities is crucial in a crowded game market, says David Wynn, head of solutions consulting at Google Cloud for Games. Last year more than 10,000 new games were released on Steam alone, and that record looks like it will be broken again this year. As studios and publishers battle for players' attention, they are finding that communities can make the experience stickier and more meaningful to their player base. But that's only if it doesn't fall prey to the toxicity that can plague so many online spaces.

Beyond Dashboards: The Future Of Analytics And Business Intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

Analytics and business intelligence (BI) have long been understood to be fundamental to business success. Today, powerful technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), make it possible to gain deeper insights into all areas of business activity in order to drive efficiency, reduce waste and gain a better understanding of customers. Truly benefiting from analytics – particularly the most advanced and powerful analytics techniques involving AI – requires developing a top-to-bottom culture of data literacy throughout an organization and this, in my experience, is where many businesses are still failing. This is highlighted by one particular statistic that came up during my recent webinar conversation with Amir Orad, CEO of Sisense. Orad told me that according to his observations, 80 percent of employees in the average organization simply aren't leveraging the analytics that, in theory, are available to them.
